The Roots of RYO
Rockland Youth Orchestra completed its 12th season (October 2019-January 2020). Dr. Fung and Dr. Rotjan share a passion for working with students in the orchestral setting. As Rockland County natives, both have noticed a growing need and demand for this additional instruction. It is hoped that this orchestra is a supplemental experience to the great public school musical education that students currently receive throughout the county. Through years of discussion and planning, the RYO has come to fruition to help students take their skills to the next level. Learning about music is important, but participating in the act of making it with others creates a more powerful musical learning environment.
RYO previously existed as SHVYS (Southern Hudson Valley Youth Symphony). The orchestra is now based in Rockland county and rehearses and performs in Rockland county venues. RYO is a registered Not for Profit 501(c)(3) / 509(a)(2) organization. Students come to participate from school districts across the county, with several students coming from other surrounding counties.
Mission
We seek to provide students with additional challenges and training in the orchestral setting, while also offering a space for mutually motivated students to gather and share their progress with each other. This is a musical and a social venture that requires the devotion and commitment of the parents, the students, and RYO faculty together.
